Midway’s Dusk to Dawn Horrorfest

At the recent Flashback Weekend, they announced the date for this year’s Dusk to Dawn Horrorfest and 3 out of the 4 features they will be screening. And as always, it is one you are not going to want to miss.

Taking place on Saturday, Sept. 21st, they will be screening undoubtedly one of the scariest films ever made, The Exorcist (1973). I know the first time I watched this was on TV in the severely edited version and it still kept me awake at night. It is a film that still packs a punch and has not lost any of its effectiveness to creep into the audiences’ psyche. With great performances from Jason Miller, Max Von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, Linda Blair, and of course, Ellen Burstyn, who gives a performance that I think is one of the reason this movie is so powerful, since we are living through her character. Not to mention the incredible makeup effects by Dick Smith (and his young assistant Rick Baker). Seeing this one the big screen will really be a religious experience!

They will also be screening Fred Dekker’s Night of the Creeps (1986), starring the one and only Tom Atkins. Another great monster flick from the ’80s that gives us zombies, alien slugs, and some incredible special effects. It’s fun and gory and proves that horror/comedies can work on both levels.

A 4K restoration of Lucio Fulci’s Zombie (1979) will also be screening. Now I have seen this on the big screen a few times, and even at the drive-in before. But I am still excited to see it once again, but anytime you can see a classic like this on the big screen, it really is a must. Like all these films, you are getting the chance to see a film the way it was meant to be seen. Since Zombie is one of my all time favorites and would be in my Top Ten Favorite films (if I was ever to make one of those… ), I will never get tired of watching this. And getting to see it on the big screen again, with a bunch of friends, just makes for another memorable evening. Incredible makeup effects, a great cast of genre favorites, including Richard Johnson, and a splinter-in-the-eye sequence that still makes you cringe while watching it, especially when seeing it on a 90-ft. screen!

And they still have one more title to announce!!!

So mark the date on your calendar for a night of 4 classic horror features under the stars! There will be horror vendors (including Kitley’s Krypt and Horror Slave), plenty of great treats at the concession stands, and you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of other horror fans! What could be better than that? Besides, you’ll be keeping the spirit of the drive-in alive for future fans to be able to enjoy!
