A Triple Dose of Mattei & Fragasso

Severin

Nothing beats some good old fashion Italian gore flicks from the ’80s. Back when plot, storyline, or even anything remotely coherent didn’t matter as long as we got plenty of gore. Sometimes even topping the gore was the complete insanity of the story themselves! Two names that you could always depend on for delivering the goods in those categories was Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso. And now thanks to Severin, they’ve got a triple terror treat from these two guys.

In 1988, Lucio Fulci had started on Zombie 3 (1988) but left during the production for a variety of reasons, depending on who you asked. Bruno Mattei was brought in to finish. What we get now is one of the most insane zombie flicks ever made. Plenty of gore and outrageous special effects, including the famous flying zombie head!

Severin’s Blu-Ray release is from an uncut 2k scan, and features plenty of interviews. Also, the first 3000 will come with the re-mastered soundtrack CD of music by Stefano Mainetti.

Then the following year, Claudio Fragasso, using the name Clyde Anderson, gave us Zombie 4: After Death, another over the top gore-filled zombie epic! Back in the old VHS bootleg days, these two titles were must have for any serious Italian gore fan/collector. Crazy, outrageous, and nonsensical fun! This is also getting a 2k scan release, as well as the first 3000 coming with the first official release of the soundtrack CD with music by Al Festa.

But the real treat here is the release of Shocking Dark (1989). This film was directed by Mattei, and written by Fragasso and Rosella Drudi, and stars Geretta Geretta and Tony Lombardo. To say this is similar to Terminator and Aliens is a slight understatement. Mattei never shy’d away from being ‘inspired’ by other films, even at the end of his career with films like Zombies: The Beginning, which is pretty much Cameron’s Aliens except with zombies instead of the aliens.

This was released outside the US as titles like Terminator II and Alienators, but had never been available in the states, until now. Severin will be releasing it from a 2k scan from the director’s cut negative that was discovered in a Rome lab vault. The disc will include an interview with Fragasso and Drudi, as well as Geretta!
