Ray Harryhausen – Special Effects Titan

Ray Harryhausen Special Effects Titan

This 2011 documentary calls Ray Harryhausen a special effects titan. Now one of the meanings of the word titan is “a person or thing of enormous size, strength, power, influence”. Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better word, especially the last two words in that description: power and influence.

As a child, decades before CGI would ever hit the big screen, Ray Harryhausen brought creatures to life in front of our eyes, one that we’d only maybe seen in cartoon form before. These memories were as powerful as they could get. And as for influence, what he showed was possible probably drove so many youngsters to try their own hand at following in his footsteps and trying to create their own animated masterpieces. Sure, while most of them outgrew that fascination, there were something that never outgrew it and would later make path in animation, special effects, or one of the other many things that Harryhausen inspired us with.

This documentary by Giles Penso is now being released on DVD and bluray by Arrow Video and is really a must have for any genre fan. You’ll not only get to hear from the man himself, but the countless others that wanted to follow in his footsteps, like Randy Cook, Peter Jackson, Nick Park, Phil Tippet, Dennis Muren, Guillermo del Toro, and so many more. The disc also features interviews with Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Rick Baker, and others. As well as 12 interview outtakes, deleted scenes, on the set of Sinbad, and so much more.
